5G will be MUCH faster than 4G

With a peak download speed of 500 Mbps, latency won't be an issue for 5G. While this peak will not be reached by every user, the average download speed will far exceed that of 4G. Interestingly though, there will be large differences between countries. The chart below shows the average download speed that should be reached by 90% of users. In South Korea, they will be able to benefit from a 161.8 Mbps, while the U.S will have to be satisfied with less than ten times that. Not that this is the reliable speed, which means that higher speeds will be attained all the time anyways.

South Korean E-Mart to buy eBay's South Korean Unit for $3B

E-commerce platform eBay Inc. agreed to sell an 80.0% stake in its South Korean unit to retailer E-mart for about $3.0 billion, the companies said Thursday. eBay said the deal valued its unit, which runs G-market, IAC and G-9 online markets, at $3.8 billion. The San Jose, Calif.-based company said it would still retain a 19.99% stake in its South Korean unit after the transaction. E-mart, a retailer affiliated with the Shinsegae Group conglomerate in South Korea, said in a regulatory filing that its board had confirmed the agreement. eBay's South Korean unit is the country's third-largest e-commerce business after Naver and Coupang Inc. E-mart, a late comer to the e-commerce business, would become the second-largest e-commerce business in South Korea if it is combined with eBay's operations in the country, analysts said.

PayPal to hike digital fees for retailers

Starting Aug. 2, PayPal (ticker: PYPL) will move away from flat fees of 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction, using a menu of fees for various online, in-store, and other types of transactions. Depending on how the revenues split between branded and unbranded transactions, the price increases could add $4.3 billion to $6.9 billion in 2022, estimates Evercore ISI analyst David Togut. At the upper end, those gains would add 27% more revenue than current consensus estimates of $31.2 billion in 2022.

Gaming sales driven by mobile downloads, not consoles

Good news for firms like Playtika, the Israeli-based gaming app we covered earlier this year. Mobile phones have become the most used way for gamers to access their play time. Phones are becoming bigger (thus better to use), and increasingly handheld by the young which translates into larger markets and larger sales.
