Taiwan might be tagged as a currency manipulator: its currency falls

The Biden Administration is likely to include Taiwan in its currency manipulator list. Impairing trade with the Taiwanese nation does not seem like a great idea though, as the Taiwanese laughed that if that's what the US aimed to do, they could simply stop selling them their semiconductors. The Taiwanese dollar fell 2% since the early March peak of 28.5 per US dollar, falling to 28 for most of the first quarter. Rising US treasury yields is also a pressure on the currency, as investments tend to be directed overseas.

Goldman Sachs bearish on Indonesian Rupiah

The central bank of Indonesia says the rupiah is heavily undervalued, but GS is convinced that further rising US yields will keep damaging the demand for rupiah as capital flies oversea. The rupiah dropped 4% this year, making it the worst performing emerging Asian currency, second only to the Thai baht. It is now at 14,635 per dollar, its lowest since November.

In other words, the purchasing power of the dollar - its value in terms of what it can buy - has decreased over time as price levels have risen.

While greenback makes comeback, the Yen and Euro fall

The USD future depends in large part on whether the Federal Reserve responds to the more aggressive inflation outlook. While the Euro has fallen somewhat slightly, Goldman Sachs believes the euro could trade at $1.28 by the summer, a 10 cents rise from where it is today.
